Final Mass at St James and Reception
For more than 100 years St James Church in East Ham Road has been a centre of worship and a focus of witness to the people of this area of Littlehampton. Opened in 1910 as a daughter church of St Mary’s (the parish church of Littlehampton) St James became a parish in its own right, and then one of the constituent parishes in the Littlehampton and Wick Team Ministry.
Sadly, the church is to close at the end of this month. Bishop Martin Warner, the Bishop of Chichester, will celebrate the final Mass at St James on Sunday 28th January at 6.30 pm.
There is much to celebrate and give thanks to God for as we look back over the history of the church, but as a former vicar’s daughter wrote the other day 28th January will be ‘a bitter-sweet occasion’. For some of the congregation, St James has been their spiritual home for many years, and they will value all the support they can get as the church closes and they begin the next stage in their Christian lives as part of a different worshipping community.
After the final Mass, there will be a Reception in the church hall. We look forward to welcoming many people who have been part of the life of the church in the past, and everyone who can be with us to take part in this occasion.
